Shed & Lean-To (Single-Slope) Framing Guide

1. The Critical Difference: Symmetrical Gable vs. Shed Roof

On a conventional symmetrical gable roof, two rafters rise from opposite walls and meet at a central ridge board. As a result, the horizontal run of each rafter is exactly half of the total building span:

Gable Roof Run = Building Span ÷ 2

On a shed roof (also known as a lean-to, skillion, or mono-pitch roof), the rafters slope continuously across the entire width of the structure in a single plane. Therefore:

Shed Roof Run = Total Building Span (Full Distance Between Wall Plates)

2. Calculating Wall Height Differences

To achieve your desired pitch on a shed roof, the high supporting wall (or ledger board attached to an existing structure) must be taller than the low wall plate by an exact vertical dimension:

Wall Height Difference = Run (in feet) × Pitch Number (X)

Example: You are building a 12-foot wide shed addition with a 3:12 pitch:

Run = 12 feet
Height Differential = 12 × 3 inches = 36 inches (3.0 feet)
If the low eave wall is 8'0", the high wall top plate must be 11'0".

*Line length is the theoretical hypotenuse between the outer faces of the front and rear walls. Total length includes 12" horizontal eave projection at the front.

4. Three Ways to Seat Rafters on Shed Wall Plates

Unlike gable rafters that meet at a center ridge beam, mono-pitch shed rafters span from a low wall to a high wall. Carpenters utilize one of three primary connection methods:

A. Double Bird's Mouth Notch

Standard horizontal wall plates are framed on both walls. The rafter has two individual bird's mouth notches cut into it: one at the low wall (heel cut facing down) and one at the high wall (heel cut facing up). Ensures full 3.5-inch flat bearing on both 2x4 plates, but requires careful layout so the notches align perfectly.

B. Angled Beveled Top Plates

The top plates of both walls are ripped on a table saw at the roof angle (e.g. 14.04° for a 3:12 pitch), or the rafters sit flat across standard plates with Simpson Strong-Tie seismic hurricane clips (such as H2.5A or H10A) securing each rafter. This eliminates cutting bird's mouth notches entirely.

C. Ledger Board with Joist Hangers

For lean-to additions built against an existing house, a 2x6 or 2x8 structural ledger board is lag-bolted into house studs. Rafters receive a single plumb cut at the top and slide into sloped joist hangers (such as Simpson LSSU) or sit on a 2x2 ledger bearing strip.

5. Low-Slope Waterproofing & Roofing Material Limits for Sheds

Because shed roofs span the entire structure, builders often choose lower pitches (such as 2:12 or 3:12) to avoid excessively tall exterior high walls. However, low slopes require special attention to moisture protection:

  • Clear Polycarbonate / PVC Corrugated Sheets: Require a minimum slope of 1.5:12 to 2:12 (approximately 7° to 10°) to prevent water from backing up past horizontal panel overlap seams.
  • Corrugated Metal Panels (5V Crimp, R-Panel): Require a minimum pitch of 3:12 with rubber-gasket screws driven through the panel ribs or flats into solid wood purlins.
  • Standing Seam Metal: Can be installed as low as 1:12 or 2:12, making it the premier choice for low-pitch modern studio sheds and office outbuildings.
  • Asphalt Architectural Shingles: Under the International Residential Code (IRC R905.2.2), shingles are prohibited below 2:12. For pitches between 2:12 and 4:12, two layers of asphalt-saturated underlayment or a continuous self-adhering ice-and-water barrier must cover the entire plywood sheathing.
  • High Ledger Headwall Flashing: If leaning against an existing house wall, ensure the metal headwall Z-flashing extends at least 4 inches up behind the home's water-resistive barrier (housewrap) and at least 4 inches out over the top course of shed roofing.
